A living archive, built together

Every photograph has a story.
Help us keep both.

We are gathering the material and local knowledge that will shape the Hessle Road digital archive. Explore the themes below and help us fill in the details. New archive material and stories will be added every week.

Photographs: old & new

Historic streetscapes, family albums, shopfronts and new photographs documenting Hessle Road today. Names, dates and locations make every image more useful.

Fishing heritage & working life

Memories of trawlers, crews, dockside work, fish houses and the families connected to Hull’s fishing industry. First-hand recollections and supporting documents are especially welcome.

Pubs & community gathering places

The Vauxhall Tavern, other Hessle Road pubs and the places where people met. Photographs, pub stories, teams, celebrations and changing uses all contribute to their history.

Shops & local businesses

Independent shops, trades, market stalls and businesses past and present. Help us identify former names, owners, shopfronts and the people who worked there.

People, families & side streets

School days, neighbours, community events, housing and the ordinary moments of local life. The surrounding streets are part of the story too.

Contribute to this theme →
Memories & oral histories

Written memories and local voices, preserved with the contributor’s agreement. We plan to connect online contributions with future memory sessions and oral-history activities at the heritage centre.

Archive in development

Preserving the source.
Sharing the story.

Our aim is to bring photographs, documents and memories together with clear descriptions and contributor credits. Historic photographs and newly created paintings will be presented as different kinds of material.

We also want to record Hessle Road as it is now — its people, businesses and streets — so future generations have a record of their own.

Have you spotted a missing detail?
A name, a date, a location or a correction can turn a picture into a piece of history. Please include the image title or reference when you contact us.
