The skill behind a familiar shop

Making and repair belong in the story of the road as well as shopping. Henry Hird describes jewellery and watch repair services and work carried out in-house. A repaired family keepsake can carry memories across generations.

What the objects can tell us

A tool, a receipt, a work apron or a carefully repaired object can be the starting point for a maker’s story. Tell us who used it, where they worked and what the skill involved. We will distinguish family recollection from a confirmed record.

A new chapter at the Vauxhall

Hull Creative Skills and Heritage CIC brings heritage and practical creativity together at the Vauxhall Tavern, 1 Hessle Road. The pub and café are part of the project, with a heritage centre and upstairs workshops and classrooms being developed or planned.

Sources & illustration notes

The workshop scene illustrates the project’s creative direction. It is not a photograph of the current premises, an inventory of completed products or a claim that classes are already running. Merchandise remains planned; all profits from project sales are reinvested in community projects.
