Hessle Road’s story belongs to the people who have lived it. A photograph can show a street, but your memory can tell us who lived there, what happened behind the shop counter and why a familiar place mattered. In Their Own Words is an invitation to help build a community collection of those stories.
Home and neighbours

Which house did you grow up in? Who lived next door? Tell us about your street, terrace or court, the sounds you remember and the neighbours who made it feel like home. Even a small detail can help bring a place back to life.
Shops and shopkeepers

Which shop did you always visit, and what did you buy? We would love to hear about favourite shopkeepers, window displays, childhood treats and the places where people stopped for a chat. Include a shop name or address if you remember it.
Working lives

Tell us about your first job, a family trade or the people you worked alongside. Memories of fishing, shops, workshops, offices and other local work are welcome. A photograph, receipt or keepsake may help tell the story.
School days

Do you remember the walk to school, a favourite teacher, a playground game or an unforgettable school trip? Share the school’s name and approximate year. If you send a class photograph, tell us which names you know and which you would like help identifying.
Nights out

Which pub, club or meeting place holds your memories? Tell us about the music, celebrations, friendships and evenings that still make you smile. A ticket, programme or old photograph can be the start of a wonderful story.
Family traditions

What did your family do for birthdays, Christmas or Sunday dinner? Was there a recipe, saying or yearly outing that everyone remembers? These everyday traditions are part of the area’s heritage too.
