Reported haunting
The Old Ropery
- Place
- West Dock Avenue, off Hessle Road
- Period / source date
- Investigations reported in 2016; later coverage in 2021
Bob Carver’s former pattie-making premises became the subject of ghost investigations. Newspaper coverage places visiting teams at the building in 2016. Published paranormal accounts describe banging and crashing, alleged shadowy figures and unexplained injuries during investigations. The industrial setting makes this a distinctive local story, but the claimed experiences do not establish a supernatural cause.
Next research: check the building’s earlier uses against directories and plans. Claims about particular spirits, deaths or a “demon” should not be treated as historical facts.

The Alexandra’s haunted reputation
- Place
- Alexandra Hotel, Hessle Road
- Period / source date
- Claim discussed in Mike Covell’s 2017 article
Historian Mike Covell records that a former landlord claimed the Alexandra was haunted and had photographed “orbs”. His article also explains that the adjoining green space is a Jewish burial ground. The published account establishes that a haunted reputation was being discussed; it does not identify a particular ghost or prove that the photographs show spirits.
The burial-ground history and the landlord’s paranormal claim are separate matters. We do not attribute a haunting to anyone buried nearby. A dated first-hand account would help establish how the story developed.

The Wellington Lane ghost scare
- Place
- Anlaby Road side of the neighbourhood; later Day Street alignment
- Period / source date
- October 1852
Carnegie Heritage Centre identifies a Hull Packet article of 22 October 1852, page 5, concerning a haunted house at the bottom of Wellington Lane. The lane’s alignment later became associated with Day Street. A surviving transcription describes repeated knocking, large crowds gathering outside and police trying to discover the source of the disturbance. The episode is documented as a Victorian ghost scare; the cause is not established by the material presented here.
Next research: read the full original newspaper page and subsequent reporting. This address was on the Anlaby Road side of the surrounding neighbourhood, rather than on Hessle Road itself.

The cellar presence at the Whittington & Cat
- Place
- Commercial Road, adjoining the eastern end of the Hessle Road area
- Period / source date
- Accounts published in January 2026
A feature in The Hull Story records owner Gill Ralph’s stories of a presence in the cellar supposedly turning the gas off, and staff seeing people who disappear. The article recounts a long history of the premises alongside those experiences. These are reported pub stories, rather than findings that a particular deceased person haunts the building.
The pub is in the adjoining docks and Castle Street area. Historical claims about deaths at the premises need independent checking before being connected with any supposed ghost.

A haunting said to follow its witness
- Place
- Redbourne Street off Hessle Road; several other homes in the account
- Period / source date
- Hull Daily Mail report, 9 August 2014
A newspaper account reproduced by Mysterious Britain describes a woman who believed unexplained disturbances followed her through several homes. One was on Redbourne Street, off Hessle Road. Her account included missing belongings and other unsettling domestic experiences. It is a personal story spanning different locations, rather than evidence that Redbourne Street as a whole is haunted.
Next research: check the original report and seek permission before adding personal recollections or images. A supernatural explanation remains the witness’s interpretation.
