The story so far

Built in 1937 for Boyd Line as Arctic Pioneer, the steam trawler later sailed as Arctic Viking H452. She capsized off Flamborough Head on 18 October 1961. The family-led heritage project records five men lost, fourteen rescued by the Polish vessel Derkacz and one who had been put ashore in Norway before the sinking.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE VESSEL

The final-voyage research roll

20 names from the family-led Arctic Viking Heritage Project: five lost, fourteen rescued and one put ashore before the sinking. The project’s combined rescue list is used where its pages differ.

The project lists the bosun as Samuel Waddy and gives his full name as Arthur Samuel Waddy. Historical transcriptions vary. This research roll remains open to documentary corrections; no unverified additional names have been included.

Vessel sources & research

Researched October 2026. This is a growing vessel record. Crew-list coverage and dates are explained above; a name’s absence is not evidence that someone never served. Corrections and documents are welcome at info@hessleroad.com.
