A growing community archive · New content every week A street name can bring back a whole world: a family home, a familiar corner, a neighbour or the walk to school. This first selection celebrates eight names from around the main Hessle Road. It is the beginning of a growing collection, with room for the streets, courts and terraces you remember. 01 Boulevard The junction with Hessle Road is a focal point in the Council’s conservation appraisal. The Fishermen’s Memorial highlights the area’s fishing heritage. Do you have photographs or memories of this meeting point? 02 Coltman Street A residential street with a place in the story of the Headscarf Revolutionaries. Hull History Centre records that Lillian Bilocca lived here with her husband Charlie and their children. 03 St George’s Road Amy Johnson was born at 154 St George’s Road on 1 July 1903. Her story reminds us that an ordinary local house can be the starting point of an extraordinary life. 04 Wassand Street Hull History Centre records Wassand Street as Lillian Bilocca’s birthplace in 1929. Her connections with the neighbourhood are part of the wider story of fishing families and their campaign for safety at sea. 05 Tyne Street One of the ‘three rivers’ streets identified in the Council’s Hessle Road appraisal as surviving examples of housing associated with the former fishing community. Which families and doorways do you remember? 06 Dee Street Another name in the ‘three rivers’ group. Photographs, house numbers and family recollections can help us record the street as people experienced it, from everyday routines to special occasions. 07 Ribble Street The third name in the Council’s ‘three rivers’ group, also listed in its Priority Streets Programme. Please give the full street name when sharing a memory so we can connect it with the right place. 08 Strickland Street Part of the local street network around Hessle Road. Tell us about the landmarks you passed, the neighbours you knew and the journeys that made this street part of your day. The decorative nameplates and street scenes are artistic interpretations, not exact historic sign replicas. Ribble Street follows the Council records and is not interchangeable with Ribble Avenue. https://www.hull.gov.uk/downloads/file/5015/hessle-road-camp ↗ https://hullhistorycentre.blogspot.com/2023/08/remembering-lillian-bilocca.html ↗ https://www.hullhistorycentre.org.uk/research/research-guides/amy-johnson.aspx ↗ https://www.hull.gov.uk/downloads/file/4868/priority-streets-programme ↗ https://news.hull.gov.uk/07/04/2025/council-announces-essential-carriageway-maintenance-scheme-on-boulevard/ ↗ Follow another thread There’s more to discover.
